What Data Is Collected
Log Files
This site follows standard procedure when using log files. These files log visitors when websites are accessed. All hosting companies do this as a part of the hosting services' analytics. The information collected by log files include internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet Service Provider (ISP), date and time stamps, referring/exit pages, and possibly the number of clicks. These are not linked to any information that is personally identifiable. The purpose of this information is for analyzing trends, administering the site, tracking users' movement on the site, and gathering demographic information.

Security Logs
The internet protocol (IP) addresses of visitors and the usernames of login attempts are conditionally logged to check for malicious activity and to protect this site from specific kinds of attacks. Examples of conditions when logging occurs include login attempts, log out requests, requests for suspicious URLs, changes to site content, and password updates. This information is retained for 14 days.

When visitors leave comments on this site, the data shown in the comments form, the visitor’s internet protocol (IP) address and browser user agent string are collected to help spam detection.

An anonymised string that has been created from an email address (also called a hash) that has been entered (if any) in the comments form may also be provided to the Gravatar service to see if the service is being used. After approval of the comment, their Gravatar profile picture is then visible to the public in the context of the comment. For privacy policy details, please see the Gravatar Privacy Policy.

Google Analytics
This site uses Google Analytics' 3rd-party audience data to better understand the demographics of visitors. It is possible to opt-out of this automated collection of data either by changing the settings in individual google accounts or by using a web browser opt-out plug-in.

Embedded Content
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, 360-degree panoramas, hike replays). Embedded content from other websites such as this behave in the exact same way as if the visitor had visited the other website directly.

These websites may collect data about visitors, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor the interaction with that embedded content, including tracking interactions with the embedded content if the visitor has an account and is logged in to that website.

Who The Data Is Shared With
This site uses the Akismet anti-spam service. The information that Akismet collects about visitors who comment typically include the commenter's internet protocol (IP) address, user agent, referrer, and Site URL. This also includes other information that was directly provided by the commenter such as names, usernames, email addresses, and the comments. For privacy policy details, please see the Akismet Privacy Policy.

This site is part of a network of sites that protect against distributed brute force attacks. To enable this protection, the internet protocol (IP) address of visitors attempting to log into the site is shared with a service provided by For privacy policy details, please see the iThemes Privacy Policy.

This site is also scanned for potential malware and vulnerabilities by the iThemes Site Scanner. This scanner could find any personal information that was posted publicly (such as in comments) during the scan.

How Long The Data Is Retained
If visitors leave comments, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so that follow-up comments can be recognised and approved automatically instead of them being held in a moderation queue.

Security logs, however, are retained for 14 days.

This Privacy Policy does not apply to other websites. It is recommended that visitors consult the respective Privacy Policies of third-party websites for more detailed information. This information may include practices as well as instructions about how to opt-out of certain options.

Another priority is the added protection for children while using the internet. It is encouraged that parents and guardians observe, participate in, and/or monitor and guide their online activity. This site does not knowingly collect any Personal Identifiable Information (PII) from children under the age of 13. If there is a suspicion that a child has provided this kind of information to this site, please contact me immediately and attempts at promptly removing such information from the records will be made.
